UBC continues to stand out among the world’s top universities for making a global impact
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings assess universities’ social and economic contributions through their success in delivering on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs address global challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity and peace and justice.
For 2021, UBC ranks second in Canada overall and 13th globally out of more than 1,115 participating institutions from 94 countries, based on its contributions through research, outreach and stewardship.
1st in Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
UBC ties for first in the world for industry and innovation impact. This encompasses the university’s patents, 233 companies spun off from UBC research, and research income from industry. Connections between universities and industry are critical to bring inventions and solutions life.
3rd in Climate Action
UBC ranks third in the world for taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, which includes UBC’s early commitment to carbon neutrality and ongoing extensive response to the climate emergency.
5th in Sustainable Cities & Communities
UBC tops the rankings in Canada for its research on and institutional approaches to sustainability. This includes sustainable land use and providing for mixed-use, accessible communities, as well as diverse arts and cultural facilities.
5th in Life Below Water
UBC ranks fifth globally, in recognition of the work by university researchers and educators to study and monitor aquatic species and environments at risk, promote environmental stewardship for the oceans and find solutions to pollution.
6th in Responsible Consumption & Production
UBC tops the rankings in Canada in recognition of its aggressive, zero-waste action plan, zero-waste foodware strategy, sustainable procurement, and recycling program — all of which works toward diverting waste from landfills.
7th in Life on Land
UBC ranks seventh overall and first in Canada for sustainable land management, support for threatened species, and commitment to local biodiversity.
